The only global event in this field, it allows researchers and professionals from the art and heritage disciplines to discuss, share, and debate a wide range of issues relating to art history and all of its political, social, and societal ramifications.<\/p>\n

For France, which is hosting the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris<\/span>, the CIHA will rank among the country’s major events of the year.<\/p>\n

Organized by\u00a0the French Art History Committee (CFHA) in partnership with\u00a0the National Institute of Art History (INHA<\/a>), the Lumi\u00e8re University Lyon<\/span> 2<\/a>\u00a0and the Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes Historical Research Laboratory (LARHRA<\/a>\u00a0CNRS UMR 5190), the 36th edition of this congress will take place at the Congress Center of the Cit\u00e9 Internationale de Lyon<\/span> from June 23 to 28, 2024<\/span> (https:\/\/www.cihalyon2024.fr\/en\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The theme of this 36th edition of the CIHA is “Matter and Materiality”\u00a0which is “inherent to the conception, production, interpretation and conservation of artifacts in all cultures across all periods of time\u2026\u00a0The concept of materiality \u2026 refers to the fact that the artifacts are composed of materials and, at a theoretical level, to all the processes \u2014 technical, cultural and social \u2014 that undergird the realization and the material perception of works of art.<\/p>\n

This theme opens onto a whole panoply of very topical questions that reflect major societal, ecological and ethical changes. The congress will also address a wide range of\u00a0technical issues\u00a0relating to different\u00a0categories of objects, from paintings to prints, from architectural techniques to the use of waste materials, from the human body to clothing, among others.<\/p>\n

According to Olivier Bonfait, President of the French Committee for the History of Art (CFHA), organizer of the CIHA 2024:<\/p>\n

During the congress, there will be more than 1000 speakers from more than 70 countries and Turkish author Orhan Pamuk<\/span>, a Nobel Prize\u00a0laureate, will deliver the opening speech.<\/p>\n

Among the talks on the multiple subjects related to the main themes of the congress, there will be presentations by several prestigious speakers including Georges Didi-Huberman<\/span> (EHESS, Paris<\/span>), \u00c9ric de Chassey (INHA, Paris<\/span>), Sven Dupr\u00e9 (Utrecht<\/span> University, Netherlands<\/span>), Finbarr Barry Flood<\/span> (New York University<\/span>, New York, USA<\/span>), Tim Ingold<\/span> (University of Aberdeen, Scotland<\/span>), Isabelle Pallot-Frossard<\/span> (President of the Fondation des Sciences du Patrimoine, Paris<\/span>), Antoine Picon<\/span> (Harvard University Graduate School of Design<\/span>, Cambridge<\/span>, USA<\/span>), Devika Singh<\/span> (Courtauld Institute, London<\/span>), Gabriela Siracusano<\/span> (Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero, Buenos Aires, Argentina<\/span>) and Monika Wagner<\/span> (Universit\u00e4t Hamburg<\/span>, Hamburg<\/span>).<\/p>\n

Several round tables will address issues related\u00a0to digital technology, the art market, libraries, international research and\u00a0restoration programs. And because the congress cannot address the subject of ‘matter’\u00a0without giving a voice to those who work on it, two international artists will present their relationship to materiality (in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon<\/span>): Sheela Gowda<\/span> (from India<\/span>)\u00a0and Jefferson Pinder<\/span> (from the USA<\/span>, with support from the Terra Foundation). Artprice and its L’Organe Museum of Contemporary Art which manages\u00a0La Demeure du Chaos (otherwise known as the\u00a0“Abode of Chaos”, Dixit\u00a0The New York Times) will participate\u00a0in collaborative knowledge-sharing workshops.<\/p>\n

In the evenings, discussions will continue during exceptional events organized with partner museums and foundations and the support of active patrons.<\/p>\n

A special evening will be hosted\u00a0at the global headquarters of Artprice by Artmarket, with a visit to its historical and unique documentary archive of art market knowledge from 1700 to the present day, located in the heart of its\u00a0Contemporary Art Museum at the Abode of Chaos. A\u00a0meeting will also be scheduled between its founding President, thierry Ehrmann, the scientific managers of the different departments of Artprice and CIHA researchers.<\/p>\n

In addition, the Circle of Lyon Museum Patrons will host a reception at the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts during which restored\u00a0works from its\u00a0collection will be presented, and Lyon’s<\/span> Museum of Contemporary Art will host\u00a0the re-edition of a banquet designed by the Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri<\/span>, thanks to a loan from the National Center of Visual Arts and the collaboration of Michelin-starred Lyon<\/span>-based chef, J\u00e9r\u00e9my Galvan.<\/p>\n

There will also be various heritage excursions\u00a0to the surrounding\u00a0Auvergne \/ Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes region during the last day of the congress (Friday 28 June 2024<\/span>). Congress participants will thus be able to discover some important\u00a0cultural places\u00a0such\u00a0as the buildings designed by Le Corbusier<\/span> (Firminy and Le Couvent\u00a0de la Tourette), the monumental heritage at\u00a0B\u00e2tie d’Urf\u00e9 and\u00a0Puy-en-Velay, the exceptional Palais Id\u00e9al du Facteur Cheval (Postman Cheval’s Ideal Palace), the Royal Monastery of Brou and the major\u00a0museums of the region including those of Grenoble and Saint-Etienne, as well as\u00a0important sites for conservation and restoration techniques (ARC Nucl\u00e9art in Grenoble).<\/p>\n

Throughout the congress, participants will be able to visit the city’s museums, contemporary art centers and galleries, and\u00a0discover the architectural heritage of the city’s different eras\u00a0(the Old Lyon district, the buildings designed by\u00a0Tony Garnier, the city’s industrial heritage, etc.). Lyon<\/span> is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n
