On July 14<\/span>, hosted by GDToday,\u00a0and organized by Kwong Wah Yit Poh Press Berhad, “Flavor of Guangdong<\/span> lychees, all the way to Malaysia<\/span>“,\u00a0Guangdong Lychee Tasting Event was held in Penang<\/span>, Malaysia,\u00a0presenting four quality lychees from Guangdong Province,\u00a0including Xianjinfeng, Lingfengnuo,\u00a0Nuomici, and Xinlongdiding.<\/p>\n

“We just tried out four kinds of lychees just now.\u00a0I think each has its own unique style.”\u00a0Liu\u00a0Zhirong\u00a0from Kwangtung & Tengchow Association Penang expressed how he\u00a0adored <\/span>the fruit he tried. Liu\u00a0said his association represents overseas Chinese communities in Penang<\/span> and believes lychee is exciting to strengthen business ties and people-to-people exchange with China<\/span>. “We hope to partner up with Guangzhou<\/span> and Dongguan\u00a0to hold more exchanges on fruit promotion.”\u00a0he said, “We can also bring our durian to China,\u00a0and import more lychees from Guangdong,\u00a0along with other fruits.”<\/p>\n

To celebrate the fruit during its harvest season,\u00a0an art gallery show was also introduced on the spot,\u00a0putting several traditional Chinese paintings and oil paintings\u00a0by prestigious Lingnan artists.\u00a0“After seeing the picking video and paintings,\u00a0we have a glimpse of a lychee harvest in Guangdong<\/span>.”\u00a0said YB\u00a0Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Executive Council (EXCO) Member, “Along with these ink and watercolor paintings,\u00a0we just felt mind-blowing.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to YB, he thinks the China<\/span>–Malaysia<\/span> collaboration should be two-way. “We can also bring our durian to China,\u00a0and import more lychees from Guangdong<\/span>. It’s coming from the heart of our people.”\u00a0he explained.<\/p>\n

Local chefs also gained inspiration from the lychees shipped from Guangdong,\u00a0to make new “lychees” dishes,\u00a0adding to the vibrancy of Malaysian gastronomic culture. The event has also attracted some younger online popular vloggers and they shared with us their impressions of China<\/span>. Serena, a local vlogger in Malaysia<\/span>, was pleasantly surprised to find out lychees\u00a0are used to make dishes. She hinted at what could be the possibilities ahead for the young Malaysians exploring China<\/span> as a tourist destination. “I think for young Malaysians,\u00a0I can use my platform to show them all these specialties like lychees from China<\/span>.”\u00a0she detailed, “We have more direct flights now and good visa policies now. Many young Malaysians are considering traveling to China<\/span>.”<\/p>\n

The event comes as a timely collaboration between the two nations,\u00a0as China<\/span> and Malaysia<\/span> signed a slew of trade deals on June 19, 2024<\/span>, allowing fresh Malaysian durians to make their way to China<\/span>. Up next, more exchanges and cooperation are expected between Malaysia<\/span> and the GBA,\u00a0to strengthen the half-century of diplomatic relations between China<\/span> and Malaysia<\/span>.<\/p>\n
