BAKU, Azerbaijan<\/span>, June 4, 2024<\/span> \/PRNewswire\/ — COP28<\/span> President Dr. Sultan Al Jaber<\/span> today told delegates at the opening of the Baku Energy Week that all stakeholders need to leverage the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the energy transition and the growth of the Global South to accelerate climate positive sustainable development for all.<\/p>\n

Dr. Al Jaber<\/span> also called on the energy and technology sectors to work more closely together on accelerating the adoption of AI to sustainably meet the world’s growing energy demand and drive decarbonization.<\/p>\n

“While AI is driving a surge in energy demand, it is also driving efficiencies that curb emissions. In fact, the growth of AI is one of three mega-trends that will shape our future, alongside the accelerating energy transition and the rise of emerging markets and the global south. And the closer the AI and energy collaborate, the more solutions we can unlock to drive decarbonized growth everywhere,” Dr. Al Jaber<\/span> said in a speech on the opening day of Baku Energy Week, taking place in the Azerbaijan<\/span> capital through to 6 June.<\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0Al\u00a0Jaber\u00a0said\u00a0that\u00a0the COP28<\/span> Presidency and the\u00a0UAE\u00a0would\u00a0work\u00a0“very\u00a0closely with\u00a0Azerbaijan’s COP Presidency and we call on all countries to\u00a0ensure COP29\u00a0is\u00a0a resounding success that builds on the outcomes of Dubai<\/span>.”<\/p>\n

“COP28<\/span> made history with the UAE Consensus- delivering the most comprehensive set of climate breakthroughs since the Paris Agreement,” Dr. Al Jaber<\/span> said, “And, against a very difficult geopolitical backdrop, we proved that multilateralism is alive and well.”<\/p>\n

“We united the world around a practical pathway to keep 1.5\u00b0C within reach, while building resilience and maintaining socio-economic development for all,” Dr. Al Jaber<\/span> said.<\/p>\n

In line with the UAE Consensus commitment to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, the UAE and Azerbaijan<\/span> are today celebrating the groundbreaking of the Bilasuvar and Neftchala Solar PV plants and the Absheron Garadagh wind project. Together, they will provide over 1 GW of clean power for Azerbaijan’s<\/span> growing energy needs. The projects, announced last year, are being developed by Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy powerhouse, and SOCAR, Azerbaijan’s<\/span> state oil company.<\/p>\n

“This builds on the UAE’s history of partnership to enhance this country’s green growth development and promote sustainable development globally. Practical partnerships like these that will help turn the UAE Consensus into tangible reality around the world,” Dr. Al\u00a0Jaber said.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0COP\u00a0Presidencies\u00a0Troika, which\u00a0was\u00a0mandated in\u00a0the\u00a0UAE\u00a0Consensus\u00a0and\u00a0unites\u00a0COP28 with the\u00a0Azerbaijan and Brazil COP Presidencies, will help drive ambitious collective climate action, he said.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Troika is\u00a0building\u00a0momentum for\u00a0a\u00a0new\u00a0round\u00a0of\u00a0strengthened\u00a0Nationally\u00a0Determined Contributions (NDCs) aligned with the UAE Consensus.<\/p>\n

Industry\u00a0must\u00a0also\u00a0continue to\u00a0play\u00a0its\u00a0role, Dr.\u00a0Al\u00a0Jaber\u00a0said,\u00a0praising SOCAR\u00a0for\u00a0joining the\u00a0Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter launched at COP28<\/span>.<\/p>\n

“We now have over 40 percent of the industry committed to zero methane emissions by 2030 and\u00a0net\u00a0zero\u00a0by\u00a0or\u00a0before 2050,”\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Al\u00a0Jaber\u00a0added, “To those who have not signed up yet, I urge to you to do so.”<\/p>\n

“You\u00a0have\u00a0the\u00a0power, the\u00a0resources\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0technology\u00a0to\u00a0make\u00a0a\u00a0massive positive impact in a short amount of time,” he told delegates.<\/p>\n

Al\u00a0Jaber\u00a0noted\u00a0that\u00a0bold\u00a0steps\u00a0must be\u00a0matched\u00a0with\u00a0pragmatism,\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0energy\u00a0transition\u00a0will take place in different places at different paces and that every industry needs tailor-made solutions.<\/p>\n

The COP28<\/span> President noted that the expansion of data centers to power the growth of AI will require renewable energy be backed up by natural gas. COP29<\/span>, which will be held in Baku<\/span> in November, will “focus like no other COP” on the issue of climate finance, an essential enabler of\u00a0the\u00a0UAE\u00a0Consensus.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Al\u00a0Jaber\u00a0welcomed\u00a0the\u00a0news that $100 billion<\/span> climate finance pledge had finally been\u00a0met, he\u00a0said: “I am encouraged\u2026But we need much more finance to be much more available, accessible and affordable.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Al Jaber<\/span> said that International Finance Institutions (IFIs) and Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) “have a critical role to play in helping make emerging and developing markets more investable. He also said that “the private sector must step up to help turn billions into trillions.”<\/p>\n

These solutions include\u00a0ALT\u00c9RRA, which was launched at COP28<\/span> with a US$30 billion<\/span> commitment from the UAE, making it the world’s largest private investment vehicle for climate change action. It will play a critical role in driving at-scale climate investments to where they are most needed.<\/p>\n

“The Fund will mobilize $250 billion<\/span> in additional investments over the next six years, across emerging markets and the global south and I believe it provides a model that should be followed to unlock finance at scale,” Dr. Al Jaber<\/span> said.<\/p>\n
