Around the date this year, people on both the Chinese mainland and in <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span> are commemorating the important historical events through exhibitions, seminars, visits and art displays.<\/p>\n<p><b>Shared history<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1894<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span> launched a war of aggression against China. In <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 1895<\/span>, the defeated Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) government was forced to cede <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span> and the Penghu Islands to <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>After <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span> occupied <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span> in 1895, the people of <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span> engaged in relentless resistance. Over 50,000 of these people joined mainland resistance efforts during World War II, motivated by their mission to save the motherland and to save <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>On <span class=\"xn-chron\">Oct 25, 1945<\/span>, the ceremony to accept <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan&#8217;s<\/span> surrender in the <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span> province of the China war theater of the Allied powers was held in <span class=\"xn-location\">Taipei<\/span>. From that point on, China recovered <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Documents like the 1943 Cairo Declaration and the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation mandated <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan&#8217;s<\/span> return to China. <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span> surrendered under the terms of these documents, and <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span> was officially restored to China on <span class=\"xn-chron\">Oct 25, 1945<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Ren Dongmei, a research fellow at the Institute of Taiwan Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan&#8217;s<\/span> restoration, which was celebrated by local residents as the end of the island&#8217;s colonial oppression, confirmed that <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span> is a part of China, and bonds people on the two sides of the Strait as members of a community with common interests and a shared future.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Wu Yongping<\/span>, director at the Institute for Taiwan Studies at Tsinghua University, said <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan&#8217;s<\/span> restoration to China holds multifaceted significance, as its return healed the &#8220;deep wound&#8221; in the nation&#8217;s history that <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span> became a Japanese colony when China was poor and weak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With Taiwan&#8217;s restoration, China once again became a unified and complete country.
