New Yorkers left <span class=\"xn-location\">Manhattan<\/span> behind on July 26\u00a0to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and flavors of <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span> at the Lincoln Center, which marked Shanghai Day as part of its fourth annual Summer for the City event.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of more than 10 programs, organized by the Lincoln Center and the Center for China Shanghai International Arts Festival, the local audiences experienced a multifaceted portrait of <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai&#8217;s<\/span> contemporary culture where traditional aesthetics intersect with modern innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors from diverse backgrounds were treated to a wide array of attractions including a <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span> artisan market with handmade crafts and interactive demonstrations, and a fantastic screening of the animation classic\u00a0<i>The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s July and it&#8217;s hot; and in July in <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span>, it&#8217;s really hot, so you get a true sense of both <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span> culture and <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span> weather,&#8221; <span class=\"xn-person\">Bill Einreinhofer<\/span>, a three-time Emmy\u00a0Award-winning filmmaker, who has also made documentaries about <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span>, told <span class=\"xn-person\">China Daily<\/span> at the event.<\/p>\n<p>The day saw a big concert inspired by the popular video game <i>Arknights<\/i>, which showcased <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai&#8217;s<\/span> fusion of heritage and contemporary digital culture.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Andrew Cap<\/span>, a content creator who has studied and lived in <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span>, drew parallels between the two cities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think there&#8217;s a lot of similarity between <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span> \u2014 the multiculturalism, the international feel,&#8221; he said, noting that <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span>, with its relatable vibe and history, is a great first step for the people of <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> to better understand China.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are parts of it (<span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai<\/span>) that feel like <span class=\"xn-location\">Europe<\/span>, there are parts of it that feel very international, very modern. I think it&#8217;s a great place to go to experience China for the first time,&#8221; Cap added.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the cultural program, the Shanghai Grand Theatre presented the dance drama Lady White Snake. The production re\u00adimagined a 1000-year-old Chinese legend through the contemporary lens of transformation, identity and self-liberation.<\/p>\n<p>Zhang Xiaoding, general manager of the Shanghai Grand Theatre, a key platform for promoting <span class=\"xn-location\">Shanghai&#8217;s<\/span> cultural presence on the global stage, called bringing the production to the festival a significant step.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the past, we&#8217;ve had deep collaborations with many artistic groups and artists from <span class=\"xn-location\">Europe<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span>, but\u00a0<i>Lady White Snake\u00a0<\/i>marks our first time presenting an original work based on a traditional Chinese story to international audiences. Through this contemporary interpretation, we hope to showcase the creative direction of Chinese performing arts,&#8221; Zhang said.<\/p>\n<p>Acclaimed ballerina <span class=\"xn-person\">Tan Yuanyuan<\/span>, who is also the artistic director of\u00a0<i>Lady White Snake\u00a0<\/i>and former principal dancer of San Francisco Ballet, said it was her privilege to work on this production and bring it to new audiences. &#8220;For me, dancing is a bridge to a lot of places. Dance brings joy to people,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>The members of the cast all boast strong international backgrounds.
