Vis<\/span> (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot\u202f<\/b>in Hong Kong SAR.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These successes mark a significant milestone for <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Singapore&#8217;s<\/span> legal education on the international stage. In particular, the Jessup championship was last won by a <span class=\"xn-location\">Singapore<\/span> university in 2001. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On 5 April, Team SMU emerged as the World Champion at the 2025 Jessup Moot, which is the world&#8217;s largest and most prestigious moot court competition, drawing law students from across the globe to tackle pressing international legal challenges. This year&#8217;s Jessup moot saw fierce competition with record participation from\u202f805 teams representing 104 jurisdictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth time SMU YPHSL has reached the final round of this competition since making its debut in the international rounds of this competition in 2013. It took first runner-up positions in 2013, 2014 and 2022, despite being one of the youngest law schools to compete.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Considered one of the &#8216;grand slam&#8217; international moots, the Jessup competition simulates a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. Each law school may send only one competing team, which presents written and oral arguments on complex international legal topics. Winners of national or regional qualifying rounds advance to the White &amp; Case International Rounds in <span class=\"xn-location\">Washington, D.C.<\/span> typically during the first week in April, where they compete for the coveted Jessup World Cup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Teams from <span class=\"xn-location\">Australia<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">India<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Singapore<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> advanced to the Semi-Final Round held on 4 April. In a thrilling culmination, <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> and the <span class=\"xn-org\">National University<\/span> of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy ultimately faced off in the Final Round, where <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> prevailed as the final winner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The stellar <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> team \u2013 comprising final-year LLB undergraduates Lovein Sui, <span class=\"xn-person\">Elizabeth Ho<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Genieve Wu<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Raelee Toh<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Erica Wee<\/span> \u2013 impressed judges of the International Court of Justice with their masterful legal reasoning, poise, and advocacy. Additionally, Erica was named Best Oralist of the competition. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Barely a day later in <span class=\"xn-location\">Hong Kong<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> mooters also took to the podium at the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> <span class=\"xn-person\">Willem C. Vis<\/span> (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot, after nine rounds of intense competition. The victory marks <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU&#8217;s<\/span> third championship title at Vis (East) since debuting in the competition in 2010, having previously won in 2022 and 2015. The University also achieved podium finishes in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Vis (East) team from the <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> comprised Juris Doctor students <span class=\"xn-person\">Samantha Loh<\/span> and Aishwarya Salkade, and law undergraduates <span class=\"xn-person\">Jonathan Teo<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Adele Ling<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Evangeline Han<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Vis (East) Moot is the sister competition to the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in <span class=\"xn-location\">Vienna<\/span>. As international commercial transactions and cross-border disputes continue to rise across <span class=\"xn-location\">Asia<\/span>, Vis (East) offers law students, academics, and practitioners exposure to global arbitration and international trade law\u2014through an Asian lens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a compelling showdown with the National Law University Delhi in the Final Round, <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> was declared the champion. In 2024, <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> mooters claimed world championship titles in the International Criminal Court (ICC) moot court competition held in <span class=\"xn-location\">The Hague, Netherlands<\/span>; Refugee Migration; Fletcher; and Perera competitions. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Barely a day later in <span class=\"xn-location\">Hong Kong<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> mooters also took to the podium at the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> <span class=\"xn-person\">Willem C. Vis<\/span> (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot, after nine rounds of intense competition. The victory marks <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU&#8217;s<\/span> third championship title at Vis (East) since debuting in the competition in 2010, having previously won in 2022 and 2015. The University also achieved podium finishes in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Vis (East) team from the <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> comprised Juris Doctor students <span class=\"xn-person\">Samantha Loh<\/span> and Aishwarya Salkade, and law undergraduates <span class=\"xn-person\">Jonathan Teo<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Adele Ling<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Evangeline Han<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Vis (East) Moot is the sister competition to the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in <span class=\"xn-location\">Vienna<\/span>. As international commercial transactions and cross-border disputes continue to rise across <span class=\"xn-location\">Asia<\/span>, Vis (East) offers law students, academics, and practitioners exposure to global arbitration and international trade law\u2014through an Asian lens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a compelling showdown with the National Law University Delhi in the Final Round, <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> was declared the champion. The School is also the tournament leader in prominent competitions such as the International Criminal Court (<span class=\"xn-location\">Hague<\/span>), Price Media Law (Oxford), Frankfurt Investment, and Vis East (<span class=\"xn-location\">Vienna<\/span>) moots. <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> teams have consistently excelled in the Jessup (<span class=\"xn-location\">Washington<\/span>), Mandela, and LAWASIA competitions, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few weeks ago, <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> won the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.smu.edu.sg\/news\/2025\/04\/04\/smu-law-students-triumph-23rd-red-cross-international-humanitarian-law-moot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">23rd Red Cross International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot (Asia-Pacific Region)\u00a0<\/a>held between 12 and <span class=\"xn-chron\">15 March 2025<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">Hong Kong<\/span>. In 2024, <span class=\"xn-org\">SMU<\/span> mooters claimed world championship titles in the International Criminal Court (ICC) moot court competition held in <span class=\"xn-location\">The Hague, Netherlands<\/span>; Refugee Migration; Fletcher; and Perera competitions.
