LONDON<\/span><\/span>, Oct. 30, 2024<\/span><\/span> \/PRNewswire\/ — The Royal Meteorological Society has announced the winners of this year’s Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year Competition, chosen by a panel of judges with expertise in meteorology, photography and journalism.<\/p>\n

\u00a9Wang Xin, \u2018Sprites Dancing in the Dark Night\u2019, Winner, Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year 2024<\/span> <\/div>\n

The Winner of Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year Title Prize is Wang Xin<\/span> <\/b>of China<\/span>, for ‘Sprites Dancing in the Dark Night’, a magnificent example of red sprite lightning, which only lasts a few milliseconds, requiring patience and skill to photograph.\u00a0 Xin wins a \u00a35000 prize.<\/p>\n

Main Title<\/b>\u00a0Runner Up, is Andy Gray<\/span>, <\/b>from the UK,\u00a0whose image,\u00a0‘Hoarfrost Heaven’, depicts spectacular hoarfrost in the Peak District. Andy’s prize is \u00a32500. Third place <\/b>goes to Jamie Russell<\/span> for ‘Evening Shower over the Needles’, showing a downpour and rainbow over the Isle of Wight<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The Winner of<\/b>\u00a0Standard Chartered Smartphone Weather Photographer of the Year<\/b> is Nur Syaireen Natasya Binti Azaharin <\/b>of Malaysia<\/span>, for ‘Volcanoes’, depicting subtle weather features amongst smoking volcanoes in East Java, Indonesia<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Smartphone runner up<\/b>\u00a0was Lesley Hellgeth<\/span> <\/b>of the US, with ‘African Dust over Athens’<\/span>, capturing Saharan dust surrounding the Parthenon in Athens<\/span>. \u00a0Smartphone Third Place is awarded to Peter Reinold<\/span> <\/b>from the US, who captured ‘Circular Rainbow’ from his aeroplane seat.<\/p>\n

The Winner of Standard Chartered<\/b>\u00a0Young Weather Photographer of the Year<\/b> for under-18s is Austrian Angelina Widmann<\/span>. <\/b>\u00a0‘Rain Aria’\u00a0shows an opera singer singing through a downpour during an open-air opera performance. Second Place goes to Ellis Skelton<\/span> <\/b>for ‘Saturated Earth and Sky’s Promise’. Third Place in the Young category is awarded to Lincoln Wheelwright<\/span> <\/b>from the US for ‘Fire and Ice’, a dramatic shot of a thunderstorm rolling in.<\/p>\n

The Standard Chartered Climate Award<\/b><\/p>\n

New to this year’s competition is the Standard Chartered Climate Award. The winner is Gerson Turelly\u00a0<\/b>of Brazil<\/span>. Gerson wins a prize of \u00a31000 for his image, ‘Rowing’, which shows a kayaker attempting to rescue stranded people in Porto Alegre, Brazil<\/span>, during the devastating floods of Spring 2024, ‘Rowing’ also wins the title of<\/b> Public Favourite<\/b>, following a public vote on the Royal Meteorological Society website.<\/p>\n

The 2024 competition saw an increase in entries raising awareness of the impact of climate change on our weather patterns around the world.<\/p>\n
